Alisha Shimpi is a New York City-based documentary and fine art photographer. She grew up in New Jersey and spent the majority of her teen years exploring photography as a creative outlet and after-school profession. During that time, she took photography courses at the School of Visual Arts and the Fashion Institute of Technology.

After moving to New York City in 2019 and enrolling at the Fashion Institute of Technology, Shimpi turned her attention to documentary photography, initially combining self-portraiture and diaristic text to explore her struggles with depression and anorexia. Her current work offers an insider’s perspective into the culture of BDSM in New York with a goal of educating viewers and destigmatizing the lifestyle.

Her latest project, Pilgrimage, will be on view in Chelsea, Manhattan in May-June 2024.
